"Set me as a seal upon your heart, as a seal upon your arm, for love is strong as death, jealousy is fierce as the grave. Its flashes are flashes of fire, the very flame of the Lord. Many waters cannot quench love, neither can floods drown it. If a man offered for love all the wealth of his house, he would be utterly despised." - Song of Solomon 8:6–7
Speaking of her marriage, a fellow believer once quipped to me, "you can't live on love". In the context of our conversation I had to agree. Love won't pay the rent. But, when it comes to the bond and durability of any marriage, love is an absolute necessity. The tsunamis of disaster, the floods of grief or, even the outpouring of wealth can quickly dissolve any union without true love.
How intense are the words of the bride for her beloved! She desired nothing less than to be a seal on his heart and arm. She knew that the strength of true love was the only power that would hold them together throughout the years. Could it be that her knowledge of true love came from knowing the Source of true love? ... "I led them with cords of kindness, with the bands of love" (Hosea 11:4).
Every marriage, family, and friendship is only as strong as the love that binds it together. Some people think that they can fall out of love, but when God is the source, you have unquenchable love. That is the kind of love that will fight to survive, no matter how high the waves or how strong the winds of hardship. It might not pay the rent...but it will certainly weather the storm!
