"Then Jacob made a vow, saying, “If God will be with me and will keep me in this way that I go, and will give me bread to eat and clothing to wear, so that I come again to my father’s house in peace, then the LORD shall be my God, and this stone, which I have set up for a pillar, shall be God’s house. And of all that you give me I will give a full tenth to you.” - Genesis 28:20-22
In 1974 I was a Junior in college, working a full time job to pay the freight. The cost of tuition, room and board was steep, and I was just making ends meet. Yet, I had a good job with plenty of overtime and good health. One Sunday morning I was brought under great conviction that it was time to step out in faith and obedience. It was time to start tithing and trust God with all the rest.
The interesting part of our reading today is it's placement in the Bible timeline. This occasion occurred long before Moses entered the scene. There was no written law commanding a tenth to be given back to the Lord. But, Jacob was moved with faith and gratitude to honor his God with a percentage of daily provision and trust God with all the rest.
The end of my story is no different from so many of God's people. One month I was struggling financially, and the next all my needs were fully met. The difference was found in giving God first place by tithing my income and trusting Him with all the rest. So, how about you my friend? If you haven't taken the step of obedience and faith, why not today? The Lord gives His very best to those who honor Him and trust Him with all the rest.
